Researching the careers Expo

Over the course of 2006/2007, a research programme has been employed to capture and evaluate experiences at the Careers Expo.

Overall, the Careers Expo is an efficient way of exposing people to a range of career planning information and employment opportunities in a short space of time. “In two hours you can talk to knowledgeable people in at least 10 different career categories,” says communicator and researcher Robyn Walshe of Davidson Kemp Consultancy.

Robyn believes that participants generally fall into one of three categories – browsers, explorers and appliers. Their needs range from those starting in employment who have no idea of their career direction through to those who are very focused in making career decisions.

Careers Expos are valuable for browsers because they broaden their ideas of career, study, and training options.

“I think that expos work particularly well for explorers who are looking to have their reaction to a career confirmed. They are testing out their passions and an expo is an efficient way of doing that. They can talk to people who are really knowledgeable and can help them understand what a specific job or career direction actually involves.”

Most career decisions are an amalgam of many experiences. Our responsibility is to create as much exposure as possible, so individuals can broaden their horizons and expand their awareness of career progression and development options, and/or study and training opportunities for their chosen career path.
