The careers Expo Experience
An independent view on the effectiveness of career expos in New Zealand.
“Career decision-making is an all-age phenomenon”. People at all ages and stages in life are engaged one way or another in the career decision making endeavour.
Career Expos are becoming more sophisticated events tailored to a wide range of people at various career decision making stages. Exhibitors are certainly embracing the challenge to engage with people and bring careers to life, to lift them off the page and reveal the essence of what a particular job involves.
It seems that increasing numbers of twenty-somethings, having experienced the day-to-day realities of their chosen careers, are keen to reassess things and change direction.
How do we help avoid what has become known as the quarter-life crises? The short answer is to increase people’s awareness of and accessibility to independent career information and advice, which is still comparatively low in New Zealand. Too many Kiwis still don’t know where to turn to for information and advice when they are planning their futures or when the moment of crisis or opportunity arises.
The careers industry pours significant energy and resource into the staging of the career expos.

The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs, a nationwide network of mayors focused on youth employment and engagement in local communities, has a strong involvement with the Coca-Cola Careers Expo.
Jan Francis, Executive Officer with the Taskforce, believes the expos are an important avenue for getting training and job-related information to New Zealanders.
